WHAT WE CAN SEE IN THE ISLAND OF
LIPARI:
THE CATHEDRAL OF ST BARTHOLOMEW
The Cathedral of St. Bartholomew
was built by Count Roger, who
made a donation to Brother
Ambrose, who was appointed the
first abbot of all the Aeolian
Islands. This donation was
confirmed by Roger II in 1134.
THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
The archaeological area of
Contrada Diana in Lipari extends
into the vast plain bounded to
the east by the city center, to
the west by the slopes, to the
south by the Vallone Ponte and
to the north by the Vallone S.
Lucia. To the wide area of the
park belongs the fenced area
adjacent to the Bishop's Palace,
located south
of via Diana (now Marconi), and
other small archaeological sites
nearby.
The archaeological area of
Contrada Diana was established
in 1971 as a result of
archaeological
excavations conducted by Luigi
Bernaḅ Brea and Madeleine
Cavalier, which had revealed a
long stretch of the old Greek
city walls of the fourth century
BC. The idea of the Park was of
the Bishop's Curia and the
Municipality of Lipari, in order
to create a green lung for the
town.
REGIONAL ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The Aeolian Museum, one of the
most beautiful in Sicily,
display all its exhibits over
several buildings in the Castle
of Lipari. These are findings
from the excavations carried out
intensively in the Aeolian
Archipelago from the 40s up to
today.
