Trekking to the crater of Stromboli Island

Stromboli is an active volcano. It forms the northeastern-most of the Aeolian islands and it rises to an elevation of 924 meters above sea level, and reaches a depth of about 1700 m below the sea level. Stromboli has a persistent explosive activity and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

Two kilometres to the northeast lies Strombolicchiowhich houses a lighthouse.

The ascent of Stromboli volcano is only allowed with an authorized guide! Necessary. Without a guide can only reach the 400 m.

The path to the summit begins on the trail on the upper part of the village of St. Vincenzo. The paved road ends at the entrance to the nature reserve. Climbing up you can see St. Bartolo, the western part of Stromboli village. After a short break of five minutes to recover strength, we leave for the new trail blazed by the Forestry. Reached high altitudes, we go into dense reedbeds that invaded the slopes, giving the sensation of an “ Jungle “.  After leaving bushes and reeds, we take a second short break.

At dusk, we will go through a short slope of ash arriving at the base of the rocky ridge of Liscione, Which brings us straight to the top.

Up to 650m, among the scattered clouds and the smoke of the volcano, in front of us is the final ridge. Reached the 800 m is the first view of the craters. Arrived at the classical path rising from Labronzo for the Bastimento, appears the crater of the North-East. Here we are on the summit at 918m ready to enjoy the explosive activity of the craters of Stromboli. When the night falls, the beauty of Stromboli reaches its climax with explosions lighting up the sky of Stromboli.
