CLIMBING THE CRATER VOLCANO OF VULCANO
WITH VOLCANOLOGICAL GUIDE
Vulcano is the nearest island to the port of Milazzo, where ferries depart to the Aeolian Islands. According to mythology, the god of fire had Vulcano forges below.
In ancient times the Greeks called it Thermessa, or Therasia Hiera, so one could see the sacred island of Hephaestus forged tools that helped her Cyclops. It was the Romans who gave the final name to the island.
Uninhabited until the eighteenth century, in the early 1800 Bourbon general Nunziante come employed the island penal colony for the extraction of aluminum sulphate and sulfur. Prisoners of Lipari were condemned to work in mines and in that time have built the first houses and streets. After the fall of the Bourbons in 1860, a Scottish businessman named James Stevenson bought the northern part of the island in 1870, dedicated to the cultivation of vineyards. All his work was destroyed in 1888 due to the eruption of Vulcan, which lasted two years. Stevenson left the island and only a few peasant families remained there. Today the beautiful beaches, sea water of exceptional purity, the sun and scenery of wild beauty make it a special place.
The acrid smell of sulfur is the solemn host of visitors to Vulcano. Its volcanic activity is constant, but control over it allows you to enjoy bubbling mud and steam geysers.
The TREKKING of Vulcano starts entering the island by Porto Levante, under the Great Crater or Fossa di Vulcano, 386 meters above sea level. You can reach the summit of Volcan easily and after an hour of effort you will reach the northwestern lip of the crater, the view on the island of Lipari, Salina and the Vulcanello is magnificent. We do not recommend doing this tour in the middle of the day, when the sun is very hot and the rise, although short, is quite steep.
Yellow sulfur crystals and obsidian fragments are distributed along the walls of the volcano, which emits steam from its mouths. In addition to the warm water beaches (even in winter) because of fumaroles, another thing not to be missed are the mud baths on the side of the Levant, near the port, where the brave tourists bathe in a bath mud and they apply it on the body to the neck sunbathing. The experience is really worth, but you have to consider that, even after the shower, characteristic smell of sulfur still attached to their bathing links, towels and clothes. The therapeutic qualities no one disputes, and cover the body with mud, while the waters surrounding tickling their bubbling, it is also a curious and pleasant feeling. In the south of the island, near the small village of Gelso, beach “dell’Asino”, which can be reached by a scenic drive is a black sand paradise. To move around the island, you can rent scooters, bicycles, boats, canoes and even minibuses, or you can walk around. In western Black Sand Beach Gulf is one of the finest and most picturesque of Vulcano, although always crowded with tourists in the summer. In the extreme, Vulcanello Peninsula, a succession of lava waves produced over time rocks visible strange shapes of the sea, the Aeolians have given them the Monsters Valley name.
In summer it is advisable to perform the tour early morning or late afternoon.
The sunset of the Great Crater is another experience to live. Silence, sunlight shining and the view of the other islands on the horizon.
