ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF LIPARI

The museum complex is located on the fortress of the Castle of Lipari, massive volcanic formation with characteristics of natural fortress. The site was home to prehistoric settlements, acropolis of the Greek colony of Lipari, the successive Roman city and then again the medieval town center of Lipari, Renaissance and Baroque (until the beginning of the eighteenth century). Of this rich historical legacy, the area of the castle retains substantial evidence (identified in the planimetry underlying), that are related to the itinerary of visiting the museum.

The museum is a complex of several buildings located inside the area of the Castle, some of which are of great historical and artistic interest. A building of the fifteenth century is the seat of Vulcanological Section, while in the eighteenth century Bishop’s Palace is home to a Prehistoric Section.

The museum illustrates the historical events and the characteristics of human settlements that have taken place in the Aeolian Archipelago in the last centuries of the fifth millennium BC in the Middle Ages.

The visit to the museum and the archaeological sites and monuments of the castle is introduced and guided as well as traditional teaching equipment and also supports interactive computer.
